Chinese new year, Fire rooster, 2017

It is the year of the Fire Rooster!

January 28 marked the start of the Chinese New Year, also known as the Start of Spring Day, according to the traditional Chinese calendar.

2017 is a Yin Fire Red Rooster year. If last year’s unpredictable Fire Monkey left you feeling ungrounded, this year’s Fire Rooster may help balance that by giving your life more direction with its practicality and problem solving abilities.

What does the Year of the Rooster mean according to Chinese medicine?

Two of the five elements are associated with 2017: fire and metal.

In Chinese medicine fire dominates metal, leaving it susceptible to a weakened state. Therefore it will be important to support the organ systems associated with metal: the immune system, the skin, and the lungs. Because fire is not being checked by metal, it will be important to be aware of cardiac and digestive health, as the organs associated with fire are the heart and small intestine.

Emotional self-care and mindful meditation will be important this year. Grief and anger are emotions associated with metal and fire respectively, and may be highlighted for some of us. The opposition of fire and metal could open up potential for conflict, so it will be especially important to focus on and embrace the love, joy and compassion that are also associated with the fire element. It will be an ideal time to celebrate what is positive in our lives and focus on goals and achievements as well as a balance in life, relationships, and health.

A person’s birth year determines their animal in the Chinese zodiac. Each year’s animal is believed to parallel the characteristics of those born in that year. The rooster’s years include 2017, 2005, 1993, 1981 and 1969.

People born in a Rooster year have the general characteristics of being confident, charismatic and driven toward success in career and academics. These independent, driven Roosters are social people who are known to strut their stuff while out and about, and may be admired by those around them for their capabilities and intelligence. Detail oriented and with high standards, they are the ones to take their tasks to completion at the highest level.

The fire-driven Rooster may need to be reminded to take it easy rather than to take control and to thwart others’ paths, though their intense drive contributes to their being the most dependable of friends. They are punctual, much like their namesake animal whose call signals the new day.
